François-Joseph Navez
Pintor neoclásico y retratista belga
François-Joseph Navez fue un pintor neoclásico belga. Navez nació en Charleroi. Fue alumno de Jacques-Louis David. Pasó cinco años en Italia entre 1817 y 1822. Entre 1835 y 1862 fue director de la Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts en Bruselas. Fue un pintor de retratos muy exitoso. También pintó muchos temas mitológicos e históricos. El pintor orientalista Jean-François Portaels fue su alumno (y yerno). Jean Carolus, el pintor belga de escenas de género e interiores, fue protegido de François-Joseph Navez. Navez fue elegido miembro de cuarta clase del Instituto Real de los Países Bajos en 1826, se convirtió en asociado supernumerario en 1841 y renunció en 1851. Falleció en 1869 en Bruselas.
