François-Joseph Navez
Pittore neoclassico e ritrattista belga
François-Joseph Navez era un pittore neoclassico belga. Navez è nato a Charleroi. Fu allievo di Jacques-Louis David. Trascorse cinque anni in Italia tra il 1817 e il 1822. Tra il 1835 e il 1862 fu direttore dell'Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts a Bruxelles. Era un ritrattista di grande successo. Ha anche dipinto molti soggetti mitologici e storici. Il pittore orientalista Jean-François Portaels fu suo allievo (e genero). Jean Carolus, il pittore belga di scene di genere e interni, era un protetto di François-Joseph Navez. Navez è stato eletto membro di quarta classe dell'Istituto Reale dei Paesi Bassi nel 1826, è diventato associato soprannumerario nel 1841 e si è dimesso nel 1851. Morì nel 1869 a Bruxelles.
