François-Joseph Navez
Belgisch neoclassicistisch portretschilder
François-Joseph Navez was een Belgisch neoclassicistisch schilder. Navez werd geboren in Charleroi. Hij was een leerling van Jacques-Louis David. Hij bracht vijf jaar door in Italië tussen 1817 en 1822. Tussen 1835 en 1862 was hij directeur van de Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussel. Hij was een zeer succesvol portretschilder. Hij schilderde ook veel mythologische en historische onderwerpen. De oriëntalistische schilder Jean-François Portaels was zijn leerling (en schoonzoon). Jean Carolus, de Belgische schilder van genretaferelen en interieurs, was een protegé van François-Joseph Navez. Navez werd in 1826 gekozen als lid van de vierde klasse van het Koninklijk Instituut der Nederlanden, werd in 1841 buitengewoon lid en trad in 1851 af. Hij overleed in 1869 in Brussel.
