François-Joseph Navez
Pintor neoclássico e retratista belga
François-Joseph Navez foi um pintor neoclássico belga. Navez nasceu em Charleroi. Ele foi aluno de Jacques-Louis David. Passou cinco anos na Itália entre 1817 e 1822. Entre 1835 e 1862 foi diretor da Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts em Bruxelas. Ele foi um pintor de retratos muito bem-sucedido. Também pintou muitos temas mitológicos e históricos. O pintor orientalista Jean-François Portaels foi seu aluno (e genro). Jean Carolus, o pintor belga de cenas de gênero e interiores, foi protegido de François-Joseph Navez. Navez foi eleito membro de quarta classe do Instituto Real dos Países Baixos em 1826, tornou-se associado supernumerário em 1841 e renunciou em 1851. Ele morreu em 1869 em Bruxelas.
