Gainsborough Dupont

Gainsborough Dupont war ein britischer Künstler, der Neffe und Schüler von Thomas Gainsborough, R.A.. Dupont wurde am 20. Dezember 1754 in Sudbury, Suffolk, als ältester Sohn von Sarah, der Schwester von Thomas Gainsborough, und ihrem Ehemann Philip Dupont geboren. Im Jahr 1772 ging er bei Gainsborough in die Lehre, für den er bis zu dessen Tod im Jahr 1788 weiterarbeitete. Er ist der einzige Assistent, den Gainsborough je beschäftigt haben soll. Er wurde auch an den Royal Academy Schools ausgebildet, wo er im März 1775 Student wurde. Dupont übernahm 1788 Gainsboroughs Atelier in Schomberg House und zog 1793 nach dem Tod von Gainsboroughs Witwe nach Bloomsbury. Er malte Porträts und Landschaften in einem ähnlichen Stil wie sein Onkel sowie Landschaften mit architektonischen Ruinen, in denen er Nicolas Poussin nachahmte. Sein Hauptwerk ist ein großes Bild, das die Porträts der älteren Brüder der Trinity House enthält und sich in ihrem Gerichtssaal auf Tower Hill befindet.
