Gainsborough Dupont
Imiteerde stijl van zijn oom
Gainsborough Dupont was een Brits kunstenaar, de neef en leerling van Thomas Gainsborough, R.A.. Dupont werd geboren in Sudbury, Suffolk, op 20 december 1754 als de oudste zoon van Thomas Gainsborough's zus Sarah en haar man Philip Dupont. In 1772 ging hij in de leer bij Gainsborough, voor wie hij bleef werken tot diens dood in 1788. Hij is de enige assistent waarvan bekend is dat Gainsborough hem in dienst had. Hij werd ook opgeleid aan de Royal Academy Schools, waar hij in maart 1775 student werd. Dupont nam in 1788 het atelier van Gainsborough in Schomberg House over en verhuisde in 1793 naar Bloomsbury, na de dood van Gainsborough's weduwe. Hij schilderde portretten en landschappen in een stijl die vergelijkbaar was met die van zijn oom, en ook landschappen met architecturale ruïnes, waarin hij Nicolas Poussin imiteerde. Zijn belangrijkste werk is een groot schilderij met de portretten van de oudere broeders van Trinity House, dat zich in hun rechtszaal op Tower Hill bevindt.
