Jan Alojzy Matejko fue un pintor polaco, un destacado exponente del siglo XIX de la pintura histórica, conocido por representar eventos cruciales de la historia de Polonia. Sus obras incluyen pinturas al óleo de gran formato como Rejtan (1866), la Unión de Lublin (1869), El astrónomo Copérnico o Conversaciones con Dios (1873) y la Batalla de Grunwald (1878). Fue autor de numerosos retratos, una galería de monarcas polacos en forma de libro y murales en la Basílica de Santa María de Cracovia. Muchos lo consideran el pintor polaco más célebre y, a veces, el «pintor nacional» de Polonia. Matejko fue una de las personas notables que recibieron una carta no solicitada del filósofo alemán Friedrich Nietzsche, mientras este último sufría un colapso psicótico en enero de 1889 en Turín. Matejko pasó la mayor parte de su vida en Cracovia. Sus profesores en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Cracovia incluyeron a Wojciech Korneli Stattler y Władysław Łuszczkiewicz. Más tarde, se convirtió en director de la institución, que con el tiempo pasó a llamarse Academia de Bellas Artes Jan Matejko. Varios de sus alumnos se convirtieron en artistas destacados por derecho propio, incluidos Maurycy Gottlieb, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer y Stanisław Wyspiański. Es considerado el «Padre» del movimiento de Artes y Oficios de la Joven Polonia en Polonia.
