讓-維克多·貝爾坦是一位法國歷史風景畫家，深受義大利啟發，以其古典風格的細緻細節而聞名。 身為一位著名假髮製作大師的兒子，他成為著名畫家瓦朗謝納的學生。1785年，他作為加布里埃爾-弗朗索瓦·多揚的學生進入皇家繪畫與雕塑學院。在1785年至1793年間，他參加了多次「激勵競賽」，並從1793年起直至去世，定期在巴黎沙龍展出作品。他於1799年獲得「鼓勵獎」，其作品在1808年被授予價值250法郎的一等獎金牌。1822年8月21日，他被授予榮譽軍團勳章，晚年陷入財務困境，去世後留下遺孀深陷物質困頓之中。 他本人是米夏隆、科涅、布瓦瑟利埃、柯羅、昂方坦等人的老師。1811年至1817年間，他的幾部作品受委託為特里亞農宮和楓丹白露宮創作。貝里公爵和銀行家雅克·拉菲特等享有盛譽的業餘愛好者欣賞貝爾坦的才華，從1833年起，法國政府，特別是內政部，定期購買他的作品以豐富外省博物館的收藏。
