Józef Simmler
Klassischer polnischer Historienmaler
Józef Simmler war ein polnischer Maler, der für seinen klassischen Stil und seine polnischen Motive bekannt war. Simmler stammte aus einer wohlhabenden deutschen protestantischen Familie. Es war diese wohlhabende Erziehung, die es ihm ermöglichte, sein Interesse an Städten wie Dresden, München und Paris zu verfolgen. Vielleicht ist sein berühmtestes Werk „Der Tod der Barbara Radziwill“ („Śmierć Barbary Radziwiłłówny“), ein 1860 fertiggestelltes Ölgemälde auf Leinwand. Das Gemälde erlangte enorme Beliebtheit, als die Warschauer Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Schönen Künste, eine neu gegründete Institution mit dem Ziel, einheimische Kunst und Künstler zu fördern, es 1861 ausstellte. Es hängt heute im Nationalmuseum Warschau. Seine anderen berühmten Gemälde sind „Kinder König Edwards“ (1847) und „Porträt eines Adligen mit einem Papagei“ (1859). Józef Simmlers wesentlicher Beitrag zur polnischen Kunst liegt in der Menschlichkeit, die seine Gemälde hervorriefen. Er war ein besonders begabter Porträtmaler. Unter Verwendung der in Frankreich verbreiteten Stile der Kostümmalerei schuf er Werke, die der Öffentlichkeit einen Blick in die Vergangenheit ermöglichten. Seine Gemälde waren jedoch mehr als nur Reproduktionen der Geschichte. Die meisterhaften Werke vermittelten auch ein tiefes Gefühl für Mitgefühl, Schrecken und Zärtlichkeit. Der Schwager seiner Tochter war Eduard Strasburger, der berühmte polnisch-deutsche Botaniker. Einer von Simmlers Enkeln war Henryk Leon Strasburger, ein polnischer Delegierter beim Völkerbund.
