Józef Simmler
Peintre historique polonais classique
Józef Simmler était un peintre polonais connu pour son style classique et ses sujets polonais. Simmler venait d'une famille protestante allemande aisée. C'est cette éducation aisée qui lui a permis de poursuivre son intérêt pour des villes comme Dresden, Munich et Paris. Peut-être son œuvre la plus célèbre est « La Mort de Barbara Radziwill » (« Śmierć Barbary Radziwiłłówny »), une peinture à l'huile sur toile achevée en 1860. Le tableau a gagné une immense popularité lorsque la Société pour l'encouragement des Beaux-Arts de Varsovie, une institution nouvellement formée dans le but d'encourager et de promouvoir l'art et les artistes nationaux, l'a exposé en 1861. Il est maintenant accroché au Musée national de Varsovie. Ses autres tableaux célèbres sont « Les Enfants du roi Édouard » (1847) et « Portrait d'un noble avec un perroquet » (1859). La contribution majeure de Józef Simmler à l'art polonais réside dans l'humanité que ses tableaux évoquaient. Il était un portraitiste particulièrement doué. Utilisant les styles de peintures de costume répandus en France, il a produit des œuvres qui ont offert au public une vue du passé. Ses tableaux, cependant, étaient bien plus que de simples reproductions de l'histoire. Les œuvres magistrales transmettaient également un profond sentiment de compassion, de crainte et de tendresse. Le beau-frère de sa fille était Eduard Strasburger, le célèbre botaniste polono-allemand. L'un des petits-fils de Simmler était Henryk Leon Strasburger, délégué polonais à la Société des Nations.
