Józef Simmler foi um pintor polonês conhecido por seu estilo clássico e seus temas poloneses. Simmler vinha de uma rica família protestante alemã. Foi essa criação abastada que lhe permitiu perseguir seu interesse por cidades como Dresden, Munique e Paris. Talvez sua obra mais famosa seja "A Morte de Bárbara Radziwill" ("Śmierć Barbary Radziwiłłówny"), uma pintura a óleo sobre tela concluída em 1860. A pintura ganhou imensa popularidade quando a Sociedade para a Promoção das Belas Artes de Varsóvia, uma instituição recém-formada com o objetivo de incentivar e promover a arte e os artistas nacionais, a expôs em 1861. Ela agora está pendurada no Museu Nacional de Varsóvia. Suas outras pinturas famosas são "Os Filhos do Rei Eduardo" (1847) e "Retrato de um Nobre com um Papagaio" (1859). A principal contribuição de Józef Simmler para a arte polonesa reside na humanidade que suas pinturas evocavam. Ele era um retratista especialmente talentoso. Utilizando os estilos de pinturas de trajes predominantes na França, ele produziu obras que permitiram ao público ter uma visão do passado. Suas pinturas, no entanto, eram muito mais do que meras reproduções da história. As obras magistrais também transmitiam um profundo senso de compaixão, temor e ternura. O cunhado de sua filha foi Eduard Strasburger, o famoso botânico polonês-alemão. Um dos netos de Simmler foi Henryk Leon Strasburger, delegado polonês na Liga das Nações.
