Nicolaus Knüpfer
Scene mitologiche a linee fluide
Nicolaus Knüpfer fu un pittore dell'età dell'oro olandese. Knüpfer si formò a Lipsia, dove, secondo Houbraken, fu apprendista presso Emanuel Nysen. In seguito si trasferì a Magdeburgo, dove trovò lavoro producendo pennelli per artisti. Rimase lì fino al 1630, poi si spostò a Utrecht per lavorare con Abraham Bloemaert. Visse con lui per due anni e poi stabilì il proprio studio a Utrecht, dove nel 1637 divenne membro visitatore della Gilda di San Luca. Lavorò alle decorazioni del castello di Kronborg in Danimarca e dipinse figure nei paesaggi di Jan Both e Jan Baptist Weenix. Knüpfer fu un insegnante di successo, i cui allievi divennero grandi pittori dopo di lui, come Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu, Ary de Vois e Pieter Crijnse Volmarijn. Knüpfer dipinse quadri di piccole dimensioni con temi biblici, letterari e mitologici, oltre alle popolari opere di genere del suo tempo. Le sue figure sono spesso in pose insolite e dipinte con linee fluide e accenti bianchi.
