Paul Delaroche
Unì romanticismo e accademismo
Paul Delaroche era un pittore francese che ottenne i suoi maggiori successi dipingendo scene storiche. Divenne famoso in Europa per le sue raffigurazioni melodrammatiche che spesso ritraevano soggetti dalla storia inglese e francese. Le emozioni enfatizzate nelle pitture di Delaroche si ispirano al romanticismo mentre il dettaglio del suo lavoro insieme alla rappresentazione non glorificata delle figure storiche seguono le tendenze dell'academicismo e del neoclassicismo. Delaroche mirava a rappresentare i suoi soggetti e la storia con un realismo pratico. Non considerava gli ideali e le norme popolari nelle sue creazioni, ma dipingeva tutti i suoi soggetti nello stesso modo, fossero figure storiche, figure cristiane o persone reali del suo tempo come Napoleone Bonaparte e Maria Antonietta. Delaroche fu un allievo principale di Antoine-Jean Gros e successivamente ha guidato diversi artisti notabili come Thomas Couture, Jean-Léon Gérôme e Jean-François Millet. Delaroche è nato in una generazione che vide i conflitti stilistici tra il romanticismo e il classicismo davidiano. Il classicismo davidiano era ampiamente accettato e apprezzato dalla società, quindi come artista in fase di sviluppo al momento dell'introduzione del romanticismo a Parigi, Delaroche trovò il suo posto tra i due movimenti. Gli argomenti delle sue pitture storiche medievali e del XVI e XVII secolo attracciavano i romantici mentre l'accuratezza delle informazioni insieme alle superfici altamente finite delle sue opere attracciavano gli accademici e il neoclassicismo. Le opere di Delaroche completate all'inizio degli anni '30 riflettevano al meglio la posizione che egli adottava tra i due movimenti e furono ammirate dagli artisti contemporanei dell'epoca — l'esecuzione della signora Jane Grey (1833; National Gallery, Londra) fu la pittura di Delaroche più acclamata del suo tempo. Più tardi negli anni '30, Delaroche espose il primo dei suoi grandi capolavori religiosi. Il suo cambiamento di soggetto e «lo stile austero della pittura» non furono apprezzati dai critici e, dopo il 1837, smise completamente di esporre le sue opere. Al momento della sua morte nel 1856, stava dipingendo una serie di quattro scene tratte dalla Vita della Vergine. Solo un'opera di questa serie fu completata: la Vergine contemplante la corona di spine.
