In 1858, Schick began studying at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin with Wilhelm Schirmer. He spent the period from 1861 to 1862 in Bavaria, mainly in Munich and Brannenburg. Then he continued his studies in Berlin. In the summer of 1864 he received the great State Prize for History Painter for the picture Prometheus Mourned by Oceanus and the Nereids, which allowed him to visit Paris and London. Schick also visited Tyrol and Italy . À Rome, il fut influencé par Arnold Böcklin. En 1868, Jacob Burckhardt facilita la commande passée par Karl Sarasin à Böcklin pour trois fresques dans une pièce de jardin de sa maison à Bâle. En 1869, Schick retourna à Berlin. De retour en Italie, il copia plusieurs peintures de la Renaissance italienne pour le compte du collectionneur d'art Fritz von Farenheid, originaire de Beynuhnen. Schick a fourni 43 illustrations pour l'ouvrage « Italy », publié par Engelhorn Verlag à Stuttgart. Marié en 1879, il retourna en Italie avec sa jeune épouse. Il mourut à Berlin huit ans plus tard.
