Thomas Sunderland
Acuarelista aficionado romántico viajero
Nacido en Whittington Hall, cerca de Kirby, Lonsdale, Thomas Sunderland heredó la propiedad familiar en 1782. Sirvió como teniente diputado de Lancashire y ayudó a formar los Voluntarios de Ulverston en 1803 para defenderse contra Napoleón. Sunderland poseía una fundición que era su principal medio de sustento y financiaba extensos viajes al continente y a muchas partes de las Islas Británicas, incluyendo Gales, Escocia e Irlanda, así como otras partes de Inglaterra. Además de impulsar la industria minera de la región, Sunderland recibió formación formal del acuarelista John Robert Cozens y se dedicó a la pintura de paisajes como artista aficionado, documentando sus viajes con bocetos a pluma y tinta. Sus pinturas terminadas fueron producidas principalmente en acuarela y reflejaban la influencia romántica de Cozens y sus contemporáneos. Su obra también ha sido representada (mediante la adición de firmas falsificadas) como la del mucho más influyente pintor de paisajes Paul Sandby.
