Thomas Sunderland
Acquarellista amatoriale romantico viaggiatore
Nato a Whittington Hall, vicino a Kirby, Lonsdale, Thomas Sunderland ereditò il patrimonio di famiglia nel 1782. Servì come vice luogotenente per il Lancashire e aiutò a formare i Volontari di Ulverston nel 1803 per difendersi da Napoleone. Sunderland possedeva una ferriera che costituiva il suo principale mezzo di sostentamento e finanziava ampi viaggi nel continente e in molte parti delle Isole Britanniche, tra cui Galles, Scozia e Irlanda, nonché altre parti dell'Inghilterra. Oltre a promuovere l'industria mineraria della regione, Sunderland ricevette una formazione formale dall'acquerellista John Robert Cozens e si dedicò alla pittura di paesaggio come artista dilettante, documentando i suoi viaggi con schizzi a penna e inchiostro. I suoi dipinti finiti furono realizzati principalmente ad acquerello e riflettevano l'influenza romantica di Cozens e dei suoi contemporanei. Le sue opere sono state anche presentate (attraverso l'aggiunta di firme contraffatte) come quelle del molto più influente pittore di paesaggi Paul Sandby.
