In 1892, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created "A Corner of the Moulin de la Galette," depicting the famous dance hall in Montmartre. September 9 marks the anniversary of his death, and we commemorate this Post-Impressionist master. In the painting, flickering lights, bustling crowds, drinkers and dancers are immersed in revelry. Lautrec captures the vitality of the moment with sharp lines and vivid color blocks, showing his deep concern for the lower classes.
Lautrec was born into an aristocratic family but suffered leg fractures in childhood, leaving him disabled. This made him an observer of Parisian nightlife. He often sat in a corner of the Moulin de la Galette, sketching dancers, prostitutes, and drinkers, neither beautifying nor criticizing, only recording the truth. His work was deeply influenced by Degas and Japanese ukiyo-e, with bold compositions, intense colors, exaggerated dynamic figures, and dramatic tension. In this painting, the foreground tables and chairs contrast spatially with the dancers in the background, hinting at class and solitude.
Lautrec's art innovated poster design, merging commerce and art. His Moulin de la Galette became a symbol of Paris, influencing later artists like Picasso. Today we commemorate him not only for his unique style but also for using his brush to chronicle marginalized people despite his physical limitations, making Montmartre's nights eternal.
