Interior of a Tavern
Adriaen Brouwer captures the gritty, unfiltered reality of 17th-century peasant life in this chaotic Baroque tavern scene. Instead of noble heroes, the canvas is filled with a rowdy cast: a man in a white shirt puffs on a pipe while his pink-clad companion looks utterly dazed, and to the right, another fellow clings to a wooden post, clearly having had one too many drinks. In the background, the party has literally crashed, with figures slumped over and fast asleep by the fireplace. Brouwer pioneered these unglamorous, humorous snapshots of everyday life, famously painting himself into such scenes as the drunkard or the fool.
