Nude at His Toilette by Albert Gleizes, 1916

Albert Gleizes completely shatters the traditional nude in this 1916 Cubist masterpiece, turning a woman washing up into a dizzying puzzle of geometric shapes and bold colors. Instead of a smooth, realistic figure, we see her fragmented from behind as she leans over a basin, surrounded by floating pitchers and angular rugs. Gleizes, a founding father of Cubism who literally wrote the book on the movement, uses this piece to show how multiple perspectives can exist at once. It’s a radical departure from classical art that forces you to piece together the scene yourself!
