Under a Cloud
ca. 1900
Albert Pinkham Ryder was famous for his moody, mysterious seascapes, and this little boat battling a giant, dark cloud is a perfect example. He was a bit of a recluse who would obsessively rework his canvases for years, sometimes adding so many layers of paint and varnish that they would crack and darken over time—exactly what you see here! The tiny sailboat looks completely dwarfed by the massive, swirling storm cloud above, making you wonder if the lone sailor will make it through the night. It's a hauntingly beautiful snapshot of nature's overwhelming power.
