Madonna on a Grassy Bench
1503
Albrecht Dürer captures a tender, intimate moment in this 1503 masterpiece, showing the Virgin Mary breastfeeding the Christ child while seated on a lush, grassy mound. Notice the incredible detail in the heavy folds of her robe and the delicate wooden trellis behind her, where a parrot perches—a symbol often associated with the Virgin in Northern art. Dürer, a giant of the Renaissance, signed this piece with his famous 'AD' monogram on the stone block at the bottom, a branding move that was quite modern for his time. This work beautifully blends the realistic texture of Northern art with the idealized forms he studied during his trips to Italy.
