The Flight into Egypt
1504-1505
Albrecht Dürer packed an incredible amount of storytelling into this scene from his famous 'Life of the Virgin' series, created around 1504. You can see Joseph vigorously clearing the path with a billhook while Mary and baby Jesus ride the donkey, guided by a host of angels peering through the clouds. Dürer even included the legendary Miracle of the Palm Tree on the left, where the tree bows down to offer fruit to the Holy Family. His mastery of line work turns a small print into a dense, atmospheric forest adventure that feels surprisingly modern.
