The Rest On The Flight Into Egypt 2
Nicolas Poussin brings a moment of divine tranquility to this Baroque masterpiece, depicting the Holy Family taking a much-needed break during their escape to Egypt. While Joseph quietly reads scripture in the background, a chorus of chubby cherubs busily attends to Mary and the infant Jesus—offering fruit, holding up a makeshift canopy, and playfully interacting with the holy child. Poussin was famous for his carefully staged, almost theatrical compositions, and here he perfectly balances the chaotic energy of the angels with the serene, grounded presence of the Virgin Mary. It's a beautiful reminder that even sacred journeys require a little rest and snack time!
