The Rest during the Flight to Egypt
1504-1505
Dürer turns a biblical nap time into a bustling workshop in this incredibly detailed engraving. While Mary relaxes with baby Jesus and a choir of angels, Joseph refuses to take a break and is busy planing wood. It’s like a heavenly construction crew, with little cherubs in the foreground hauling firewood and tools to help out. High above, God peers through the clouds, giving a divine blessing to the hardworking carpenter.
