The Virgin and Child Seated by the Wall
1514
Albrecht Dürer masterfully carved this intimate scene of Mary and baby Jesus into a copper plate in 1514, right during the height of the Northern Renaissance. Notice the incredibly detailed castle looming in the background and the heavy, realistic folds of Mary's cloak, which show off Dürer's obsession with texture and light. He even signed his famous 'AD' monogram right on the wall next to them, a clever way to brand his genius. This print was so popular that it helped spread Renaissance ideas across Europe without anyone needing to travel to Italy.
