Flower Still Life
Ca. 1922-1925
Don't let the title 'Flower Still Life' fool you—there isn't a single petal to be seen here! Alexej von Jawlensky, a key figure in German Expressionism, has completely abstracted the subject into a floating mosaic of color blocks. The earthy browns, vibrant blues, and soft pinks look like a painter's color chart, but they actually represent the rhythm and emotional essence of flowers. It’s a beautiful example of how artists in the 1920s stopped painting what they saw and started painting what they felt.
