On the Shores of Loing
1896
Alfred Sisley, one of the most dedicated Impressionists, spent his later years captivated by the quiet beauty of the Loing River in France. Here, he captures a row of tall, slender poplar trees standing like silent sentinels along the riverbank, their forms dissolving into a hazy, pale blue sky. The water below acts as a mirror, reflecting the trees in a shimmering, slightly distorted dance of greens and grays. Sisley was a master of capturing fleeting atmospheric effects, and this peaceful scene perfectly showcases his ability to paint the subtle moods of nature just before the turn of the century.
