Peasant Women in the Grass
1894
Camille Pissarro captures a quiet moment in the French countryside with this loose, energetic sketch from 1894. Two peasant women are hard at work in a field—one stands holding a large bundle of hay or grass, while the other crouches low to the ground, gathering more. The quick, scribbly ink lines and warm brown washes give the scene a sense of movement and immediacy, as if Pissarro was sketching them right there on the spot. As the 'dean of the Impressionists,' Pissarro was the only artist to participate in all eight Impressionist exhibitions, and he had a deep love for depicting the honest labor of rural life, far away from the fancy city scenes of his peers.
