Orchard in Spring

Orchard in Spring by Alfred Sisley, 1881

Alfred Sisley, the only true British-born member of the French Impressionist circle, paints a scene bursting with the fresh energy of spring. Notice how the sky dominates the composition—it’s a swirling, turbulent blue that takes up nearly half the canvas, showing off his obsession with capturing atmospheric light. Down in the orchard, figures are busy at work; one person reaches high into the branches, perhaps tending to the blossoms, while another strolls along a path. Unlike his friends Monet and Renoir who loved painting people and cafes, Sisley stayed loyal to landscapes, finding endless variety in the quiet French countryside.
