Standing Nude Woman

Amedeo Modigliani

1905-1907

Standing Nude Woman by Amedeo Modigliani, 1905-1907

Long before he became the king of elongated necks and almond eyes, Modigliani was busy sketching raw, energetic figures like this one. Created around 1905, this standing nude captures the artist finding his voice while experimenting with early Cubist ideas. Notice the rough, scribbled shading running down the front of the body—it looks like he’s carving the form out of the paper with quick, aggressive strokes. It’s a gritty, unfinished vibe compared to his later polished Paris portraits, but you can already spot that signature stretching of the human form beginning to emerge.
