Caryatid; Rose and Blue
1912-14
Modigliani created this striking figure during his 'Caryatid' period around 1914, inspired by the architectural caryatid columns he studied at the British Museum. Instead of stiff stone, he gives us a fluid, almost dancing woman rendered in bold strokes of deep blue and soft rose. The figure looks like she's holding up an invisible architectural weight, yet she appears weightless herself. It's a beautiful example of how he briefly flirted with Cubist geometry before returning to his famous elongated portraits.
