The Nymphs Plate 3
1921
Modigliani was notorious for his scandalous nudes—his 1917 solo exhibition in Paris was actually shut down by the police for being too obscene! This delicate illustration, created around 1921, shows a much gentler, minimalist side of his talent. Using incredibly sparse, fluid lines, he captures the profile of a standing woman with zero shading or background clutter. It’s a beautiful example of how simplifying the human form can convey grace better than a detailed painting ever could.
