Diana by Franz Xaver Kosler, Ca 1905

You might expect Diana, the fierce goddess of the hunt, to be holding a bow, but Franz Xaver Kosler gives us a much softer, contemplative version. Painted around 1905, this piece is a classic example of Academic art, a style that prioritized technical skill and classical subjects just as the modern art revolution was brewing. The golden crescent moon in her hair is her giveaway symbol, glowing against a moody, stormy blue background. While she is usually the chaste protector of the woods, here she is draped in sheer fabric that slips off her shoulder, blending divine symbolism with a very human, vulnerable beauty.
