Madame Kisling

Madame Kisling by Amedeo Modigliani, c. 1917

With her striking bob haircut and impossibly long neck, Madame Kisling looks like she just stepped out of a 1920s fashion magazine, but with a surreal twist. Modigliani famously painted his subjects with blank, almond-shaped eyes, claiming he didn't want to reveal their souls to the world. The bold red tie and sharp suit give her a modern, almost androgynous edge that was incredibly ahead of its time for 1917. You can't help but wonder what she's thinking behind those mysterious, pupil-less eyes!
