Two Peasant Women with Pitchfork No. 5 by Julio González, 1932

Julio González was a sculptor first and foremost, so it’s no surprise this 1932 drawing looks like a wire sculpture flattened onto paper. The central figure, a peasant woman rendered in cool, metallic blues, grips a pitchfork with a rigid, architectural posture, while a second, ghostly figure outlined in warm orange looms behind her. This piece captures the Cubist influence of his close friend Picasso, transforming a simple rural laborer into a striking geometric form. It’s essentially a blueprint for a statue, showing us how a master of iron thought in lines and volumes before he ever picked up a hammer.
