Nude on a Blue Cushion by Amedeo Modigliani, 1917

When Amedeo Modigliani unveiled his series of nudes in 1917, the Parisian police actually shut down his only solo exhibition for obscenity! This reclining figure, resting on a vibrant blue cushion against a warm, earthy backdrop, showcases his signature style: elongated limbs, simplified forms, and a sensual, unapologetic gaze. Unlike many of his subjects with blank, almond-shaped eyes, this woman looks directly at the viewer with a subtle, knowing smile. The bold outlines and flattened perspective hint at the influence of Cubism, yet the piece remains deeply intimate and human.
