Auguste Rodin
1906
Think of Auguste Rodin as the rock star of sculpture, and here Anders Zorn gives him the ultimate rock star portrait. Created in 1906, this etching focuses almost entirely on Rodin's legendary, unruly beard, which explodes off the page in a frenzy of scratchy, cross-hatched lines. It makes the famous artist look less like a man and more like a wise, grumpy lion emerging from the shadows of his studio, with a faint sketch of a model visible in the background. Zorn, a close friend of the sculptor, used his needle to capture the raw, untamed genius of the man who created 'The Thinker'.
