The Great Bather
1895
Swedish artist Anders Zorn was an international celebrity who painted presidents and kings, but he loved retreating to his home in Mora to capture simple country life. In this 1895 etching, he uses frantic, scratchy lines to depict a bather resting by the water, blending her form into the deep shadows of the riverbank. He often worked directly on the copper plate without preliminary sketches, giving this scene a raw, spontaneous energy. It feels less like a formal portrait and more like a fleeting, private moment caught in time.
