Death of Clorinda
1785
In this dramatic scene from Torquato Tasso's epic poem Jerusalem Delivered, the knight Tancred kneels in horror over the dying Clorinda, only realizing too late that the enemy warrior he just struck down is the woman he loves. Swiss Neoclassical painter Angelica Kauffmann captured this tragic moment of recognition with tender emotion, which was then beautifully translated into a print by the master engraver Francesco Bartolozzi in 1785. Kauffmann was a rockstar of her time—one of the only two female founding members of the Royal Academy in London—and she frequently chose literary subjects that highlighted deep emotion and tragedy.
