Boy Drinking by Annibale Carracci, 1582-1583

Annibale Carracci captures a moment of pure, unadulterated thirst in this lively early Baroque masterpiece. The young man tilts his head back dramatically, eyes rolling up as he drains a glass of wine, while clutching a large, bulbous flask in his other hand. Carracci was a rebel who ditched the stiff, artificial poses of the time to paint real, messy, everyday people. You can almost feel the weight of the wine and the warmth of the room just by looking at his flushed cheeks and rumpled white shirt.
