Landscape with Man Sleeping beneath Tree

Annibale Carracci

1595

Landscape with Man Sleeping beneath Tree by Annibale Carracci, 1595

Annibale Carracci was basically the original plein-air artist, dragging his sketchbook into the Italian countryside way before the Impressionists made it cool. In this 1595 drawing, look at that twisted, gnarly tree—it’s bursting with energy, drawn with frantic, scribbly lines that capture the wind and texture of the bark perfectly. If you look closely at the bottom right, there’s a tiny figure napping away, completely dwarfed by nature. This piece was revolutionary because Carracci was rejecting the stiff, artificial style of his time in favor of observing the real world, helping to kickstart the Baroque era.
