Head of a Woman
about 1582
Annibale Carracci captures the raw, unvarnished reality of aging in this striking portrait from around 1582, right as the Baroque movement was beginning to shake up the art world. Notice the scribbled writing faintly visible in the dark background—it adds a mysterious, almost diary-like intimacy to the piece, as if we're peeking into a private moment. The woman's tired, reddened eyes and loose brushstrokes show Carracci's incredible skill at moving away from stiff, idealized Renaissance portraits toward something much more human and emotionally charged.
