Hercules Resting (recto); Footed Vessel with Handle (verso)
1595-97
Annibale Carracci captures the legendary hero Hercules in a rare moment of vulnerability, slumped in exhaustion after his famous labors. The incredibly muscular figure leans heavily on his club, his hand pressed to his forehead in a gesture of deep fatigue or contemplation. Created around 1595, this sketch perfectly bridges the dramatic intensity of the emerging Baroque era with classical mythology. Notice the faint, ghostly sketches of a vessel and fruit on the right side, hinting at the artist's busy, working mind as he planned out his composition on the page.
