Self-Portrait ca.
1620-21
Leaning casually against a stone ledge, a young Anthony van Dyck gazes out with the swagger of a 21-year-old rock star, which is basically what he was in the 17th-century art world. He’s wrapped in a dramatic, voluminous black cloak that swallows his frame, making his rosy cheeks and wavy hair pop against the dark background. Painted around 1620 during the Baroque period, this piece captures a prodigy—formerly an assistant to the great Rubens—just before he became the ultimate celebrity portraitist for King Charles I of England.
