Vertumnus and Pomona

Vertumnus and Pomona by Anthony van Dyck, circa 1625

In this cheeky Baroque scene, the god of seasons, Vertumnus, has disguised himself as a wrinkled old woman to sneak into the garden of Pomona, the goddess of fruit trees. While Pomona lounges half-naked among a delicious pile of melons and grapes, the disguised god leans in for a close whisper, completely ignoring the mischievous Cupid in the background who is busy loading his bow. Van Dyck masterfully captures the tension of this mythological cat-and-mouse game, blending lush, realistic fruit with the dramatic, emotional flair typical of the 17th century. It's a classic tale of deception in the name of love, proving that even gods will go to ridiculous lengths for a crush!
