Oopjen Coppit

Rembrandt van Rijn

c. 1634

Oopjen Coppit by Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1634

Rembrandt went all out with the lace on Oopjen’s collar—it’s so intricate you can practically feel the texture through the paint. Dressed in a lavish black gown and clutching a fan, she looks every bit the wealthy 17th-century socialite. This portrait is actually half of a famous pair painted for her wedding to Marten Soolmans; they were the only full-length couple Rembrandt ever painted. In a historic modern deal, the Louvre and the Rijksmuseum bought them together, meaning France and the Netherlands now share custody of this glamorous duo.
