Virgin and Child

Virgin and Child by Anthony van Dyck, ca. 1620

Young Anthony van Dyck was likely only about 21 when he painted this, clearly showing off the skills he picked up from his famous teacher, Peter Paul Rubens. Instead of a stiff, holy portrait, we get a super intimate moment: Mary in a flowing red dress looking down lovingly while a very realistic, chubby baby Jesus reaches up to nurse. The dark background acts like a spotlight, a classic Baroque trick to make the emotional connection between mother and child pop right off the canvas. It’s religious art, but it feels like a warm, relatable snapshot of real life.
