Blessing of the Flags on the Parvis of Notre-Dame
1805
Just days before crowning himself Emperor in late 1804, Napoleon orchestrated a spectacular merger of church and military power right outside Notre-Dame Cathedral. In this atmospheric scene, rows of soldiers in tall, plumed shakos stand at attention on the cobblestones while a procession moves toward the glowing cathedral entrance to have their regimental flags blessed by Pope Pius VII. The massive Gothic arches loom on the right, dwarfing the figures and emphasizing the sheer scale of the event. Antoine-Jean Gros, usually known for his gritty battle scenes, captures the solemn grandeur of the moment with a dramatic, almost theatrical lighting that hints at the coming Romantic era.
