Bull
Antoine-Louis Barye, best known for his fierce bronze animal sculptures, takes a softer approach here with a sturdy black-and-white bull standing stoically against a moody, textured sky. As a leading figure of the Romantic movement, Barye was obsessed with capturing the raw power and anatomy of beasts, and even in this quieter, two-dimensional study, the animal's muscular tension is palpable. You can almost feel the heavy, humid air of the pasture just by looking at the atmospheric, grainy background that surrounds this gentle giant.
