Calvary
1475
Antonello da Messina brings a striking sense of calm to this grim scene of the Crucifixion, contrasting the agonizingly twisted thieves on rough tree branches with the serene figure of Christ in the center. Below them, a peaceful, expansive landscape stretches out to the sea, sharply opposing the skulls and bones scattered in the foreground of Golgotha. An owl perches near the rocks, adding a touch of ominous symbolism to the scene. This Sicilian master was a pioneer in bringing Flemish oil painting techniques to Italy, allowing for the incredible luminous detail seen in the distant city and the figures' robes.
